Our Story: How Apricot & Pepper Began

On March 24, 2022, my husband and I were coming home from grocery shopping when we found a female cat at the entrance of our building.

She was yelling. Loudly. And she was very determined to inspect our groceries.

We went upstairs, and she followed us all the way to our floor. From the beginning, her personality told us she was not feral. She seemed abandoned, exhausted, and very hungry.

We gave her food and water beside our apartment door. Soon, she started living around the building. The porter’s family loved her and fed her too, but every day she kept coming back to us for meals, naps, and company.

We named her Apricot.

At first, we were afraid to let her inside because we had never had cats before. But Apricot had the kindest little soul, and slowly, she convinced us. We started letting her sleep inside. When she wanted to go out, she would yell at the door, and we would let her out because we did not have a litter box yet.

Then we realized why she was always so hungry and tired.

She was pregnant.

By April 16, I knew I wanted to keep her forever. My husband was hesitant at first, but the next day we went out and bought her a litter box, a scratcher, and dry food.

April 17, 2022, was Apricot’s first official day fully at home.

Forever.

Three days later, on April 20, she gave birth to four kittens. One sadly passed away shortly after birth, and three survived. When they were five months old, two of them were adopted by loving families. We kept one baby with Apricot so she would not be lonely.

That baby was Pepper.

Her sweet orange boy. Our beloved Pepper.

For the last four years, Apricot and Pepper have filled our home with fun, chaos, softness, and joy. They became our hearts in cat form.

Along the way, another cat became part of our story too.

Cashmere, the dominant male cat from the street, started visiting us from time to time. He would come when he was hungry, tired, or injured. My husband began treating his wounds so often that he practically became the neighborhood cat vet.

Cashmere is still very much his own man. He refuses to become a home cat at all costs, so we let him come and go whenever he wants. We feed him, care for him, and keep helping the stray cats we meet wherever we go.

Apricot and Pepper taught us to love all the cats.

Then, on November 9, 2025, a new chapter began.

Our building porter found a tiny tortie kitten with no mother. She was only about two weeks old. He brought her to us, and we knew she was staying.

We named her Toasty.

Because even as a tiny baby, she already had Tortitude.

So this is our story. Our life with cats. The beginning of Apricot & Pepper.
